Braintact Ltd. was founded as a Meytav Incubator portfolio
company on July 2005.
Sector and Field of Activity
Biotechnology, Drug Development, Therapy for acute and chronic neurodegenerative disorders.
Underlying Science and Technology
Abnormally high Glutamate (Glu) levels in brain interstitial and cerebrospinal fluids are the hallmark of several neurodegenerative conditions that result from acute events, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), nerve agents exposure, open heart surgery, or develop chronically in diseases such as glaucoma, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or HIV dementia.
As a novel neuroprotective strategy, we have established the feasibility of accelerating the naturally occurring brain-to-blood Glu efflux and attain thereby a decrease of deleterious Glu in the brain. This was achieved by decreasing blood Glu levels by the intravenous administration of blood resident enzymes.
We have tested the validity of our proposed neuroprotective strategy in several animal models of neurodegenerative conditions including head trauma, stroke, glioma, nerve agents exposure and obtained promising results which constitute the proof of concept that blood glu scavenging provides a very effective neuroprotection against acute and chronic neurodegenerative conditions.
A successful pre-IND meeting with the FDA was held on July 26, 2006. Braintact has been qualified for a fast track drug development program.
Accordingly, our neuroprotective strategy is a paradigm shift which contrasts with all previous strategies in that it does not attempt to introduce the potential drug into brain, with all the potential / adverse side effects, but aims at decreasing blood Glu levels and accelerate thereby a naturally occurring event of brain detoxification.
The acute and chronic neurodegenerative market causes a tremendous burden on society and a therapy is bound to create a multi billion drug market.
